The link between obesity and diabetes

Obesity is characterized by the abnormal or excessive deposition of fat in the adipose tissue. The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between circulating omentin and apelin concentrations and components of the metabolic syndrome in adults with and without type 2 diabetes mellitus or cardiovascular disease. Data from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1988-1994) were used. He and others began to wonder whether obesity alone told the whole story of joint destruction. We have discovered a novel mechanism in the pathway that leads to type 2 diabetes in obese people. This is perhaps the root cause of the pathway and opens up possibilities for development of new drugs based on the finding,” immunologist Dipyaman Ganguly of CSIR-IICB told IANS. Previous research has established that immune cells called macrophages infiltrate fat tissue and produce chemical mediators called cytokines which leads to inflammation responsible for the eventual insulin resistance,” explained Dr Ganguly.

“These results establish that in an environment suffering from chronic inflammation, cellular organelles (ER) lose their vitality through a specific link that is identified in our study, and suggest that therapies that target inflammatory pathways, including nitric oxide production, could be effective strategies in the treatment of metabolic disease,” says senior author Gokhan S. The Canadian Obesity Network (CON-RCO), in partnership with the International Association for the Study of Obesity (IASO) and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), ratified the Charter at a hot topic Conference of Obesity and Mental Health in Toronto in June, 2012. Doctors aren’t sure exactly why having diabetes or being obese increases breast cancer risk.
