Glycemic control in hospitalized patients not in intensive care: beyond sliding-scale insulin. – PubMed

I have found the problem to be that the docs, understandably, cater for all diabetics so while we may be more ‘unusual’ (for wont of a better word) the majority can be far less clued up or even interested. A recent study by Dr. A systematic review was conducted to determine whether a protocol-directed insulin infusion sliding scale is as safe and effective as a conventional practitioner-directed insulin infusion sliding scale, within target blood glucose ranges. With SSI regimens, patients may be at risk from prolonged periods of hyperglycemia. It is imperative that there is good communication between the Diabetes Team, the Nutrition Support Dietitian, and the extended medical teams. We were able to avoid a catastrophic event and she was up to 99 after 45 grams of carbs 45 minutes later. Knowledge is only one of the reasons why a shift to new practice may not be happening (Michie et al, 2011).

SSI-treated participants were more likely to be younger (P=.01), non-white (P=.002), and receiving sulfonylurea (P=.004) than non-SSI treated participants. Diabetes mellitus is a significant global health disorder. When unusual factors influence insulin levels, such as prolonged illness, a bolus of insulin would be provided by the pancreas if it were able to do so. Any patient with HbA1c > 48mmol/mol not previously known to have diabetes should be notified to the diabetes team. Changing the sliding-scale insulin culture requires a multidisciplinary effort to improve

Camps

Camp Bluebonnet is held at the beautiful Peaceable Retreat Center for Children in Youngsport, Texas which is about an hour northwest of Austin on FM 2484. In our camps, we have shown that education significantly improves knowledge of diabetes in both 6-11 and 12-16 year old children. It’s also an excellent opportunity for mom and dad to take a break from diabetes. Camp Kno-Koma provides adventures for young people with diabetes in West Virginia. Camps should be an enjoyable and memorable experience for all children, including children with diabetes. American Diabetes Association program staff includes a camp director, assistant camp director, unit leaders and counselors. This one-week program is located on the spacious Camp Ta-Kum-Ta camp grounds in South Hero, VT.

HbA1c dropped by 0.6 % after 12 months (p = 0.029). “Everybody is going through the same thing you are,” says Dustin. Our medical director, Dr. Through your support we will be able to provide a life altering experience to a diabetic child who might never have been given this chance because of their families financial situation. Nightly blood glucose tests performed by medical volunteers ensure the kids’ blood glucose doesn’t drop too low. This is something he has looked forward to every summer and while his parents had a hard time “disconnecting” from the daily routine of maintaining his blood sugars, they realized the first time he went away that it was so
