Diabetes Mellitus – Really the Fourth Stage of Insulin Resistance

A review of the genetic and biochemical abnormalities associated with autism reveals a possible link between the widely diagnosed neurological disorder and Type 2 diabetes, another medical disorder on the rise in recent decades. We wished to determine if well controlled human and mice with type 1 diabetes had iatrogenic hyperinsulinemia as an explanation for the increased rate of coronary artery disease (CAD) in type 1 diabetes. Waist circumference of ≥100 cm (39 inches) is a sensitive, specific, and independent predictor of hyperinsulinemia for men and women and a stronger predictor than body mass index, waist-to-hip ratio, and other measures of body fat. Five population studies have shown that insulin responses to glucose are higher in populations at greater risk of cardiovascular disease. Central obesity is associated with low-grade, chronic inflammation, which might affect insulin action and thus contribute to both insulin resistance and vascular dysfunction characteristic of metabolic syndrome. Thus, mice carrying the same genetic defects on different backgrounds exhibited the full spectrum of abnormalities observed in humans with type 2 diabetes, which allowed for identification of potential loci that promote development of the diabetic phenotype.
