Fish Oil and Spice and Everything Nice

Does anyone take Omega (fish oil supplements) for arthritis, etc.? Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω3FA) have been reported to suppress immune processes by blockade of the cyclooxygenase pathway of arachidonic acid metabolism. Therefore, in the present study, we tested the hypothesis that dietary supplementation with fish oil rich in n-3 PUFA may improve ED in otherwise healthy OPDs. Diabetic animals (n = 20) were fed a nonpurified diet supplemented with either olive oil (DO) or fish oil (DM), and control animals (n = 10) were fed a nonpurified diet supplemented with olive oil at a daily dose of 0.5 g/kg by gavage for 8 wk. Fish oil, a supplement rich in omega-3 fatty acids frequently touted for its protective effects on the heart, isn’t right for everyone. Imagine this is happening in your eyes. But in 1983(5)and in 1985(6) studies of the effects of omega-3 supplements in healthy subjects were published by investigators in Japan and England.

In one study by the American Heart Association, fish oil given to 20 patients resulted in improved arterial compliance. Fish oils, or omega-3 fatty acids, interact with receptors located on macrophages, generating a strong anti-inflammatory effect. The health benefits were attributed to protective molecules produced from omega-3 fatty acids, including one type called resolvins.
