Protective effects of Ginkgo biloba extract EGb 761 on the myocardium of experimentally… – Abstract

In a previous article on Real Diabetes Truth, nutritionist Martin Hum wrote about the findings of a study that has found that people who develop diabetes in middle age are more likely to have brain cell loss and cognitive impairment when they are older. Diabetic rats were induced by once intraperitoneal injection of STZ at the dose of 60 mg/kg, and randomly divided into the DN group (n=12, treated with normal saline by intraperitoneal injection, once daily), the extract of Ginkgo biloba (EGb) group (n=14, treated with EGb 300 mg/kg by oral administration, once every other day), and the alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) group (n=12, treated with ALA at the dose of 35 mg/kg by intraperitoneal injection, once every other day). Banaba (Lagerstroemia Speciosa) is a widely studied herb from the Philippines used for support in diabetes mellitus which the leaves have the ability to maintain normal blood sugar simulating an “insulin-like” activity and it has been traditionally used to aid in cleansing the liver and in weight control because of its ability to assist in regulating blood sugar within the normal range. In order to decrease the number of diabetes complications and to postpone their development, the use of biologic active components and plants is recommended. Diabetes was induced by injection of a single dose of streptozotocin. Serum lipid profile and antioxidant enzymes in hepatic and pancreatic tissue were measured at the end of the experimental period. Anti-oxidanten helpen neutraliseren en opruimen van deze vrije radicalen deeltjes om te voorkomen dat de soorten schade die zij zijn gekoppeld aan.

EGb 761 at the nontoxic dose used (200 mg kg-1 day-1), failed to modify the diabetes-associated increase in maternal glycemia, decrease in pregnancy rate, decrease in antioxidant enzymes, and impaired fetal development when the rats were treated throughout pregnancy (21 days). It may also help relieve chronic ringing in the ears known as tinnitus. The serum levels of glucose, insulin, interleukin 6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), MDA, SOD, and GSH-Px were determined. These alterations of diabetic muscle fibres could be due to less motion of diabetic rats and diabetic neuropathy. Effective control of diabetes requires an integrated approach which also includes exercise, weight control and a good diabetic diet. Rats were fed on standard chow diet and water was provided ad libitum. It may contribute to prevent late diabetic complications.
