Non-diabetic African American (AA) youth have an upregulated insulin secretion relative to insulin sensitivity (IS) compared with their American White (AW) peers. We have assessed prevalence of ECG-LVH and its relationship with clinical and metabolic variables in an Italian population-based cohort of subjects with Type 2 diabetes. We tested association of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) genotyped using high density microarray platform with several platelet reactivity assays, followed by individual genotyping of most significant SNPs identified in the microarray genomic scan. Altogether 44 636 medical visits by 2348 patients were identified. Expected and observed events were compared and demonstrated poor prediction. Serum ferritin was positively associated with type 2 diabetes and fasting glucose, but differences in the associations according to sex were observed. Furthermore, the contribution of CTLA4 to disease susceptibility is distinct between fulminant type 1 diabetes and classic type 1A diabetes.

In conclusion, more patients than siblings had a high MBL level, and high levels of MBL were related to high levels of T1D specific cytokines, supporting a role of the innate immune system and MBL on the risk of developing T1D.
