Diabetic Neuropathy | Doctors Same Day Surgery Center

Minimally invasive surgery may provide relief for foot neuropathy caused by compressed nerves. According to statistics, in 2014 the number of people with this disease was 422 million (fourfold increase in the number of patients within 35 years). I have had PN since 2001, which seems to have been exacerbated by running that last marathon, with numbness and tingling of the feet and hands progressively moving up the legs and arms until today the tingling encompasses my entire body, from scalp to the soles of my feet. Once the nerve is identified, using proper microsurgical instruments and techniques, anatomical structures overlying the nerve (tunnels) are incised. We do not have to think about breathing in and out our lungs manage the process automatically. Diabetic neuropathy is the result of chronically elevated or fluctuating blood sugar levels. Post Herpetic Neuralgia (PHN) Post herpetic neuralgia (PHN) is a type of nerve pain that can occur following a viral infection of herpes zoster “shingles” in the nervous system.

Goals of the surgery are to restore sensation to the hands or feet, reduce or eliminate pain and to regain strength. Patients with DPN have a significantly thicker retinaculum (1.07 mm) than control subjects (0.84 mm), P < 0.001. The surgery is performed in a hospital or a Surgery Center and takes about one to two hours, depending on the number of nerves that are affected. Symptoms result when nerves swell in anatomic regions that are already narrow, like the protective tunnels leading to the hands and feet. We planned to use Review Manager to pool the results from appropriate studies comparing the same treatments; dichotomous outcomes to obtain pooled relative risks (RR); measured outcomes to obtain pooled weighted mean differences; and a fixed-effect analysis unless there was evidence of serious heterogeneity between studies sufficient to justify the use of random-effects analysis. In the year 2000, Dellon’s group used a similar model to evaluate the effect of nerve decompression in rats given cisplatin chemotherapy. Another recent RCT evaluating SCS for PDN observed improvements in pain relief but not in QoL [13].
