Type 2 diabetes confers a greater excess risk of cardiovascular disease in women than in men. Men aged 45 to 59 years were identified from Caerphilly in South Wales, United Kingdom. Factors included: apolipoprotein E (ApoE) gene variants (the E4 allele is the strongest confirmed genetic predisposing factor for Alzheimer’s disease), the hemochromatosis-HFE gene mutations (H63D and C282Y), diabetes, and stroke. There is a need to know what interventions work best in the management of diabetes in people living with dementia (PLWD) in different settings and at different stages of the dementia trajectory. There were also declines in those with controlled diabetes and pre-diabetes but these were smaller. After undergoing brain scans, 19 was positive of Type 2 diabetes. Antihypertensive medications decreased risk, ranging from 24% for angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) to 4% for β-blockers.
There was a strong interaction of diabetes and hypertension, such that the association between diabetes and cortical atrophy existed only in hypertensive but not in normotensive participants. However, Davydow said it’s possible that diabetes affects the blood supply to the brain and may contribute to dementia.
It’s also important to note that the percentage of people who developed dementia by the end of the study was small, even in the groups with the highest risk. If these studies have correctly predicted the association, then the future burden of dementia might be even greater than that estimated as the prevalence of diabetes mellitus continues to rise5. are not responsible for the accuracy of news releases posted to EurekAlert! by contributing institutions or for the use of any information through the EurekAlert system.
