Diabetes medication reduces dementia risk

Type 2 diabetes confers a greater excess risk of cardiovascular disease in women than in men. Men aged 45 to 59 years were identified from Caerphilly in South Wales, United Kingdom. Factors included: apolipoprotein E (ApoE) gene variants (the E4 allele is the strongest confirmed genetic predisposing factor for Alzheimer’s disease), the hemochromatosis-HFE gene mutations (H63D and C282Y), diabetes, and stroke. There is a need to know what interventions work best in the management of diabetes in people living with dementia (PLWD) in different settings and at different stages of the dementia trajectory.
