Anti-Inflammatory Effects of Metformin Irrespective of Diabetes Status

On April 8, 2016 FDA announced it is requiring labeling changes regarding the recommendations for metformin-containing medicines for diabetes to expand metformin’s use in certain patients with reduced kidney function. And a study from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee shows that the most prevalent drug in the lake — the Type 2 diabetes medication Metformin — changes the hormonal system of fish exposed to it. In intact cells, metformin stimulated phosphorylation of the key regulatory site (Thr-172) on the catalytic (alpha) subunit of AMPK. We first used ovariectomised mice to examine the skeletal effect of metformin in conditions of low bone mass that are more representative of the frequent secondary osteoporosis observed in T2DM patients. Sodium glucose transporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT-2I) are another new promising molecule currently looking for its space in the management of T2DM. In the second study, the team examined the effectiveness of using metformin as a treatment for women newly diagnosed with endometrial hyperplasia, a condition that occurs when there is a hormonally related unbalanced overgrowth of the uterine lining.

However, there were no differences between metformin and gliclazide or repaglintide for either group of patients, the researchers said.
