While it is widely accepted that poor blood sugar control in people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes causes anxiety, there is now evidence that anxiety itself could bring on diabetes in some people. Every of these or other potential risk factors alone was not associated with depression or anxiety. They completed a finger-stick blood test and a questionnaire assessing demographic characteristics, depression and anxiety symptoms, and diabetes-related disabilities restricting their performance of daily tasks. A subsample of 30 women participated in follow-up qualitative interviews at their homes. Results. Given the high prevalence of depression and anxiety found in this border community, health providers should regularly assess for depression and anxiety.

The high prevalence of the six diagnoses analysed in this study calls for preventive action to minimize suffering and costs to society. Depression and anxiety scores differed with respect to their relationship to recency of diagnosis, number of children, blood glucose level, and functional disabilities restricting performance of daily tasks.
