What is it Alpha-Lipoic Acid? The goal was to estimate the effects of alpha-lipoic acid on symptoms of diabetic neuropathy after 600 mg i.v. This abnormal function of the vasculature precedes cardiovascular disease and is associated with impaired endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation. Vascular reactivity was evaluated in isolated aortic rings. In one study, alpha lipoic acid was indeed found to improve insulin sensitivity.3 Researchers gave 600mg of controlled-release alpha lipoic acid twice a day to six non-diabetic women with polycystic ovarian syndrome. An oral regimen of ALA and optimal length of treatment remains unclear. Antioxidant effects seem to be dependent on the nature of the antioxidant used and not on combination effects.
Lipoic acid is found in the body and also synthesized by plants and animals. One of the promising things about ALA is that no side effects were reported in either the animal or human studies – even with larger doses and extended use. Banaba extract contains a compound called corsolic acid that has the ability decrease blood sugar levels within 60 minutes of administration and aid in weight management (5). Lester Packer, PhD, of the University of Southern California, calls alpha lipoic acid the “universal antioxidant” because of its myriad activities. Nowadays, however, some ALA capsule manufacturers claim that they have been able to solve the problem of instability and can produce capsules containing pure, natural R-Lipoic Acid. In doing so, the physicians found that orally administered lipoic acid is both well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and widely distributed throughout the body. It is required to break down sugar (glucose) during adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production.

ALA also works closely with vitamin C and E and some other antioxidants, “recycling” them and thus making them much more effective.
