A vegan diet may help with diabetes pain

The aim of this study was to examine the efficacy and safety of duloxetine, a balanced and potent dual reuptake inhibitor of serotonin and norepinephrine, in the management of diabetic peripheral neuropathic pain. This paper reports on 1,767 individuals reporting toothache pain and 877 reporting painful oral sores. This is a cross-sectional study of 993 patients with diabetes receiving care through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Two weeks after the STZ injection, the four groups of rats had their insulin sensitivity index, mechanical withdrawal threshold, and thermal withdrawal latency assessed, allowing us to establish a rat model of type II diabetic neuropathic pain and to determine the optimum dose of STZ. Streptozocin-induced diabetes also resulted in a significant reduction in the total protein content of the AP, NIL, and hypothalamus. Thirty-two of the 37 patients with pain had paresthesias and/or dysesthesias, whereas only 7 of 18 patients without pain had paresthesias. The physical pain felt by patients could easily afflict them and have the ability to alter their moods leading to depression.

Female adolescents and those individuals who were physically active and/or utilized health-care system more acutely were more likely to report interim central nervous system pain. To examine the relationship further, Gaida and colleagues reviewed 31 previous studies. Impressively, NeuroMetrix teamed up with the renowned IDEO design team when creating Quell, leading to its patient-friendly and innovative look. They randomly assigned 17 participants to follow a low-fat vegan diet and take B12 supplements for 20 weeks, with weekly support classes. A test of the nerves in the foot also suggested that the vegan diet may have slowed or halted nerve function decline, compared to the control group. There was also a suggestion that the overall quality of life of those on the vegan diet improved, compared to the control group. The difference may have been due to chance, however. Dr. Stuart Weiss, an endocrinologist at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York, said the study was “kind of cool,” though the number of participants was small and the length of the study was short. “We always talk about diabetes and diabetes control being about diet and exercise, but we end up prescribing a lot of medications and don’t really focus that much on diet and exercise because that’s not easy,” said Weiss, who was not involved in the study.
